Cranial Sacral Therapy                    Back to Treatment Modalities

Cranial Sacral Therapy deals with restoring the natural inherent motion of the patient's sacrum and the bones of the cranium or skull.  There exists, naturally, an inherent motion that is perceivable to the trained practitioner.  It is commonly believed that this inherent motion of the skull and sacrum is an integral part of the pumping system which is responsible for the movement of cerebral spinal fluid from the ventricles of the brain down the outside of the spinal cord and then up the central canal of the spinal cord back into the ventricles.  The function of the cerebral spinal fluid is to provide nutrients to the spinal cord and its associated nerves and to remove the waste products of the spinal cord's cellular metabolism.  With an improperly operating cranial sacral system the nerves operate dysfunctionally, thus leading to diseases of organs and tissues, headaches and migraines, excessive muscle tension, spinal complaints, etc.

Birth trauma, head trauma, falling on one's tailbone, food and environmental sensitivities, etc., can easily cause a dysfunction in the inherent motion of the sacrum as well as the bones of the skull.  Skillful detection by the practitioner's hands utilizing an extremely light touch can detect a disruption in the movement of the cranial sacral system.  Once detected, normal motion is skillfully returned by again employing extremely light touch manipulation of the sacrum and bones of the cranium.
