Ahh, The Egg                           Back to Healthful Hints

The egg.  What a food!  But how we forget its importance when faulted studies are published and nearly scare egg consumption into oblivion.

The egg is a complete protein source, meaning that it provides all nine essential amino acids.  An essential amino acid is one in which the body cannot manufacture on its own and hence, it must be obtained solely from dietary sources. Amino acids are required by the body to construct the various proteins it needs to produce various tissues throughout the body.

In actuality, the egg contains high quality protein – a much higher quality than can be found in meats, fish, or milk. In addition, the egg provides Vitamin A, E, B6, B12, and folate, all of which are known to lower levels of homocysteine which is a known risk factor for heart disease.

Yes, an egg does contain 200 mg of cholesterol.  However, the egg also contains another compound called lecithin, which markedly inhibits the absorption of egg cholesterol by lowering its uptake by the small intestine.  Less absorption by the intestinal system simply means less cholesterol in the blood stream.

The egg contains 72 Calories, 7 grams of protein, 5 grams of fat, as well as a wide variety of vitamins and minerals.

Therefore, the next time someone “badmouths” the egg, just remind yourself, “Where else can you get a complete protein source which is nutrient rich and will cause no harm”?  Researchers at the University of Connecticut have concluded that the consumption of three eggs per day does not raise the risk factor for strokes or heart disease.  Researchers at the University of Illinois have found that eggs can help with weight loss since they contain the amino acid leucine, which helps to reduce the loss of muscle tissue, increase the loss of fatty tissues, and also stabilizes blood glucose levels.

So if you are not eating at least one egg per day, I ask you, “What is stopping you?”
