Blockages to Healing (Foci)         Back to Treatment Modalities

In most chronic conditions and in other conditions where therapies, adjustments, and treatment fail to bring about resolution or healing, there are, often times, one or more blockages to healing present somewhere within the Body.  Something somewhere in the patients Body is blocking and interfering with the Body's natural healing abilities.  This blockage to healing is commonly referred to as a focus (the plural form is foci).   In a normal healthy person (without foci) an organ, for instance, can show signs of weakness usually resulting in a short period of illness. Typically the patient will go through an acute phase of the disease process and then a healing stage.  However, if there are one or more foci present, the effect of the foci will allow the acute phase of the disease process to develop into a chronic pathologic phase since the healing stage is being blocked by the foci.   Any focus has the potential to effect or block healing in any part of the body.

So just what is a focus?  In short, a focus is an “irritation” somewhere in the body that affects the nervous system, acupuncture meridians, connective tissue, and/or other communication systems within the body in a detrimental fashion that causes a “simple” functional disorder to become a fixed pathological change.  Think of a focus as an irritation that the Body must continually fight and struggle with 24 hours a day - 7 days a week.  This constant distraction, caused by the focus, disallows the Body to concentrate its full healing abilities on any other arising acute condition, thus allowing the acute condition to become a chronic condition - oftentimes resistant to most therapies.  A typical focus can include: scars (both external and internal), inflammation of the teeth (including root canals), intestinal dysbiosis (an imbalance in the flora within the intestinal tract), prostheses, implants, food toxins, allergies, indoor and outdoor pollution, chronically inflamed sinuses and/or tonsils, malocclusion causing chronic TMJ problems, pelvic inflammatory disease, chronic prostatitis, chronic inflammation of the appendix, hemorrhoids, IUDs, gall stones, body piercings, tattoos, just to name a few.  Most of the aforementioned foci are seldom noticed by the patient as being a problem and hence, they are a “hidden problem”.

Whenever it appears that the patient's condition is not improving and that there may be a blockage to healing, Dr. Benham will then institute procedures to identify and to treat the foci with a very specific technique involving auriculotherapy (ear acupuncture) and/or body acupuncture with either acupuncture needles or low level laser therapy.  In addition, the focus is checked and treated, if necessary, for the existence of an emotional component by the methods of NET (Neuro Emotional Technique).  As in all treatment modalities at Benham Chiropractic, there is very, very little, if any, discomfort to the patient, there are no side effects, and there are no drugs or medications utilized.  Only by treating and hence, removing all foci can the Body fully resume its natural healing processes.
