High Blood Pressure and Sugar        Back to Healthful Hints

If salt worsens your blood pressure by raising it to moderate or even severe levels then you need to also consider your consumption of sugar.  Sugar, in the form of sucrose, wreaks havoc with blood pressure.

Sucrose in the diet lowers the amount of sodium that can be excreted from the body.  The more sugar you eat, the more sodium that is retained by the body, and hence, the higher the blood pressure.

Also consider the fact that most carbonated soft drinks are high in sugar as well as sodium.  Is it any wonder, given today’s excessive consumption of soft drinks in the U.S., that high blood pressure is at epidemic proportions?
